Marina District

The Marina District sits between the Lombard Street Expressway and San Francisco Bay, bookended by two former military installations, Fort Mason and the Presidio. San Francisco Heritage notes that it is built on former tidelands filled with sand from surrounding dunes and mud piped up from the bay floor, where a shallow cove once lay. Chestnut Street is a key corridor of restaurants, cafes and boutiques, just steps from the Palace of Fine Arts.
